I have been photographing this family for years! They have been good friends of mine for over 10 years!! (oh gosh, did I just say TEN!) I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing them yesterday at Kathryn Albertson Park in Boise.

It was a bit chilly but as you can see from the images below - SOooooo worth it! The kids enjoyed walking the trail and seeing wild life that is sticking around thru the winter. They even saw a doe laying down in some brush, mind you all we could see was her ears but it was Ah-mazing!

I loved this session (I know I say that about all my session and it's always true). I loved that this maternity session was in a cemetery and I found an old one (started in the late 1800's) in Nampa.

It was windy and cold but we hit the "golden" hour (the time just before sunset). I had the best time and the images turned out so lovely. Not only did we utilize the cemetery but we also used the tracks near the cemetery and an older building close by. It was a quick session but I think we got lots of varying images.

This is a sneak peek of my cousins quick session before we left Washington. Not only did we have a ton of fun getting to hang out with them while we had to do military stuff at the hospital on base but they really made our trip enjoyable and relieved tons of stress. They are what make our family AWESOME!

I was so happy that I could photograph these two at the Boise Depot and even though I haven't known them long I feel as though we have known each other for years. I am really going to miss them when they move away at the end of the month.

They both have really brightened up our lives and we couldn't ask for the nicest friends, they are really going to be missed.

My sister had her baby boy a few days after we did her maternity session and I had to go back home. I was bummed that he didn't want to come out while I was there because I would have to wait until the next month to come and see him.

Once I did get to see him he was almost a month old (just days from hitting that mark) and let me tell you, HE'S ADORABLE!! an absolute cutie pie!! My sister and her hubby are on cloud nine as is the rest of the family!

These are before and after images of the family pictures I did for myself and a couple friends this past month (you may have seen the sneak peeks HERE, HERE & HERE).

I have been reluctant to pick up my camera for clients over the past year and wanted to not only get a new family picture for my walls (which are bare) but to get back in the saddle and do family pictures for a few of my friends who haven't had recent pictures done in a long while, hoping that it will drag me out of the "reluctant" pit I seem to have myself in.

I think it worked because I am really looking to put my energy back into my business. I wanted to share with you that my clients images don't always come out of my camera looking AWESOME most of the time they need a bit of work.

Mind you that most of the family pictures shown on my personal blog don't get much editing if any and only get a quick crop & resize for the web but the images of my clients are edited.

This next year I am going to be doing some great specials for Families, Seniors & Weddings so that I can get my groove back and put full focus onto my business.

I had the pleasure of photographing this wonderful family. I was so thrilled they were willing to brave the cold and frigid wind, snow, ice and mud just so I could capture their family with my camera. No one fell with the exception of me (everyone falls in the mud with their camera being held above their heads, right?).

This family is super warm and loving and due to the cold I made it quick and didn't dilly dally at all. I tried to keep their frost bite to a minimum (ha ha). I hope you enjoy, I know I enjoyed photographing them!!

You have seen this family before, we have been friends for almost 10 years now and for the past several years I have done their family pictures. It was too cold to do them outside so we did them inside their home. It amazes me how quickly their kids seem to grow because it seems just yesterday their youngest was only a baby and now she's almost 3!

On October 22nd 2010 we gained a new member to our family! If you want to learn more about how she got here feel free to check out my post HERE on my personal blog.

I finally got everything together for our family pictures (as in outfits gotten and sorta matching) and I picked a location and then picked a day to do it (of course it started to sprinkle when we started to head out but quit long enough for us to get a couple of quick pics). I only ended up with 4 real shots to work with and had to do a head swap with my hubby on the tree images because as you can tell he doesn't like to smile and only smiled in one picture (the last picture), but I am super happy with these and am now working on what I want our Christmas card to look like.

I am now working on my next photo session for my kids (my older ones will be in white tank tops and MJ will be in a white onsie against a black backdrop - it's going to ROCK! at least I hope it does) I want it to mimic a picture I took of my three oldest kids when Ruth was only one or two - I loved it so much I want one similar of ALL four of my kids. Enjoy the below images, I know I do and plan on getting one of them blown up BIG for our bare walls.

I had the pleasure of meeting the newest member of this sweet family and he was adorable!! He was born early and at his birth only weighed 1 lb. 7 ozs - he was just a little guy. Today he weighs 8 lbs 11 ozs and is doing wonderfully and his parents are so glad he is now home. We all are glad he's home and healthy!!

Review of Shabby Straps

I received my straps in the mail today! WHOO HOO! I am super excited and so impressed with the way they were presented. I ordered them on Saturday and was super pleased at the speedy shipping. And how could I not love the NIKON embossed on the strap too (in the black), ya know cause I am sucha nikon girl myself!

Please note the shop has lots of other items for not only SLR cameras but for point and shoots as well. Now go on and check out the fun store on etsy!!

I also wanted to share my experience with B&H photo.

I ordered another Nikon D200 so I would have a backup as well as a battery grip, extra batteries, lens, red crumpler bag & some more memory cards. I received my packages this morning and BOY was I impressed. Everything was there. I ordered the D200 used and while looking it over noticed they forgot to include the battery charger (they sent the cord but not the actual charger). When I called they were super nice and shipped it out for me, no worries. (this is not always the case with most online retailers but I had absolutely no problems!)

I highly recommend that if you can't find what your looking for - camera wise - check them out. You won't be disappointed.

As you can see I think I met my goals for my biz stuff this year, I still want to get samples and such done but it can wait for me to save up some more money. But I did get the bag I wanted - the red 7 million dollar crumpler - IT holds everything that I own camera wise. Both bodies & 4 lenses, flash, light meter and all the memory cards and other misc stuff I need. It's perfect!! of course if I want to hold more stuff I will have to upsize but it's perfect for everything I have now.

I am not a morning person and because the kids must leave so early I am forced to be up before sunrise every morning. But really it's a blessing, I get to experience the beauty of the sun rising most mornings and have a quiet moment of reflection on the way back home. It really is a great experience.

Yesterday's sunrise was sooo pretty, but I didn't bring my camera with me but I did this morning and below are what I captured before heading home.

My baby gerbils are growing and I need to find them a new home. 2 gerbils are fine but 3 extra little mouths to feed is just insane and stinky! lol Here are some new pictures taken this afternoon after I added the fish tank back to the mix of their "space". Enjoy!

{Tips for taking better pictures}

I want to share with you a few simple steps to help you take great pictures of your kids. You don’t have to have a fancy-shmancy camera to get good pictures and with these tips you will find your pictures looking even better! Anyone can follow a few simple guidelines and end up with beautiful results. You can use these tips independently or together and you will love your new found photographic skills!

* Tip #1: Focus on the Eyes.

We all have heard that “the eyes are the windows to the soul”. I don’t know about that but I do know that when you can clearly see your subjects eyes you feel a more personal connection. The personal connection brings in your audience and makes them really feel and enjoy your picture more. This includes you too.

Focusing on the eyes also ensures that your child’s face will be in focus and not some other random body part!

Before you think to yourself, “I can’t get my kid to sit still long enough for a picture, let alone get them to look at me.” Don’t worry about that. You don’t necessarily need to have your child looking at you to get a great shot. I have some great shots of my kids running away from me!

* Tip #2: Get Down on Their Level.

We look at children from above all day long. Kids tend to be shorter than adults. It’s just nature. One way to make us take notice of a photograph of a child is to take a picture from a different perspective then we are used to viewing them. Bend your knees and get down to their level. You will really notice the results!

* Tip #3: Get Close, Real Close.

Get in there and make their face fill your entire view finder. You can show that beautiful little mug in all its glory by using your zoom feature or just getting in their face. Don’t worry about cutting off the top of their head or chin. If that happens it is fine. If it doesn’t happen it is fine also. Either ways will look great!

* Tip #4: Be Aware of the Background.

Often when we have our camera in front of our face, we are focusing on what cute thing our little cutie is doing. We sometimes forget about what is behind them and how it is going to look in a picture. If we don’t pay attention to the background we will end up with photos of things that can detract from the beauty of our children. We can also end up with some pretty funny looking pictures - like telephone poles or trees growing out of heads. Not the kind of photo we want to look at over and over!

* Tip #5: Try New Angles.

Mix it up. Use your camera to look at your child through a new angle. This can be fun and exciting. Try shooting from below or from way above. Try turning your camera a little and tipping it forward. Try laying on the ground or setting your camera on the pillow next to your sleeping baby’s head. Be creative and have fun!

{Why Custom Photography costs what it does}

Digital technology is brilliant. The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and amazing amounts of control for the photographer, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur. With flexibility comes a price though. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its' lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print.
Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

"How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?"

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let's imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session.
TIme break down:

session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
one hour travel time TO session
15-30 minutes prep time at client's home
90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
one hour travel time FROM session
30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
2-3 hours time with client for ordering images
1 hour sorting through and checking order
30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues
As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer's level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

COSTS of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run up $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we'll skip the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $25 for an 8×10 or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. According to several articles at the time, did you know that in February 2007 a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ "professional" prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait studios in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your "PORTRAITS" are considered the true "loss leader".

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don't have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, "SAY CHEESE" experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer's part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this (lengthy) article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family's memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family's most precious investment.

Once I moved to Idaho I wanted to get to know the other photogs in my area and was contacted by a sweet gal on one of the photography forums I am apart of. We hooked up today and swapped services - she photographed my family and I photographed hers. We met at a beautiful park in Boise called "Katharine Albertson Park". It was a gorgeous day and the colors of the season were so vibrant.

{Hello Idaho!}

So here I am in Idaho - specifically New Plymouth/Fruitland area - which if you recall borders Ontario, Oregon too. I am enjoying the slower pace of life compared to the Portland Metro area and my family is really loving all of our new found outdoor space! We have also added a new member to our family since moving here.

Meet Shelbee, our new-to-us, two year old beagle mix that has really added some new flames to our family fire. She is just like the kids too, full of spunk and mischief and knows how to use her "puppy dog eyes" to get out of trouble. The kids adore her and so do we.

I had the most wonderful time with a wonderful and beautiful young woman. I took her into Downtown Portland for her senior pictures. I had so much fun with her and was so glad she would model for my photo group. She totally ROCKED it and everyone just loved her. She was a natural in front of the camera.

I captured several behind the scenes images of our day out and a lot of great captures of this stunning senior and of the two adorable little models that were available. Enjoy!
